Certificate of good conduct extended

The extended certificate of good conduct may be issued to individuals who, in a professional, voluntary or other capacity, work with or are due to work with children or young people. It serves to protect children and young people. In the interests of effective child and young person protection, the extended certificate of good conduct includes convictions for sexual offences, even those carrying minor penalties. This provides employers with far more comprehensive information on the extent to which job applicants have previous convictions for certain sexual offences against children and young people, or for offences that are also particularly relevant, such as breaches of the duty of care or upbringing and the mistreatment of persons under their care.

The extended certificate of good conduct also includes, in particular:

• First-time convictions involving a fine of fewer than 90 daily rates,
• First-time convictions carrying a prison sentence of less than three months.

An extended certificate of good conduct must be issued upon application if this is provided for in statutory provisions with reference to Section 30a of the Federal Central Register Act (BZRG), or if the certificate of good conduct

• for the assessment of personal suitability in accordance with Section 72a of Book VIII of the Social Code (Child and Youth Welfare),
• any other professional or voluntary supervision, care, upbringing or education of minors, or
• is required for a role involving similar contact with minors

Examples: teachers in private schools, swimming pool attendants, school bus drivers, nursery teachers in nurseries, children’s homes or youth centres, carers in day-care and full-time care settings, youth sports coaches, leaders of children’s and youth leisure groups, etc.

Applicants may request the extended certificate of good conduct with the relevant confirmation for their own use or for submission to a public authority. In the latter case, it is usually sent directly to the requesting authority. To do so, the authority’s address and the reference number are required.
