Until 31 October 2022 - submit your property tax return

All property owners are currently required to submit data on their properties and the buildings on them - the so-called property tax return. It is used to recalculate the property tax. The revaluation is mandatory following a judgement by the Federal Constitutional Court.

REMINDER: The deadline for submitting data is 31 October 2022!

The Brandenburg Association of Towns and Municipalities, together with the Ministry of Finance, has now published a step-by-step guide to submitting property tax returns.

The Association of Towns and Municipalities provides information on this:
Brandenburg's Ministry of Finance provides detailed instructions and information on filling out the property tax declaration on the grundsteuer.brandenburg.de website. For example, the step-by-step instructions using the example of a detached house help you to complete the property tax declaration via "MeinELSTER". The click-through guide takes you through the property tax declaration right through to electronic submission to the tax office.

Before the owners start, they should have the following ready:

  • the file number (contained on the information letter from the tax office or on previous assessment notices or property tax assessments),
  • Detailed information on land and property (available via the property data information portal at grundsteuer.brandenburg.de) and
  • Information on the building such as year of construction or date of completion or living space (see notarised contract, among other things).

The land data information portal https://informationsportal-grundstuecksdaten.brandenburg.de/ provides simple access to information on land, such as the standard land values for properties in the state.

The tax offices in the state also offer a hotline on property tax reform on (0331) 200 600 20. Due to the great interest in the topic, this is currently very busy. The Ministry of Finance therefore recommends visiting the website instead if you have access to the Internet.

Electronically or in paper form?
Important to know: You need an ELSTER user account to submit your property tax declaration electronically. If you do not yet have access, you should allow up to two weeks for the activation of a new user account. The tax offices offer help with ELSTER registration, for which an appointment must be made at the tax office.
If you already have a user account, for example to submit your income tax return electronically, you can also use this account for the property tax return. If it is not possible to submit the declaration electronically, relatives, such as children or grandchildren, can also use their own registration with ELSTER to submit the property tax value declaration for parents or grandparents.
And if it is not possible to submit an electronic declaration, owners and those with hereditary building rights can also submit the property tax value declaration in paper form. The tax return forms are available to download from the grundsteuer.brandenburg.de website under "Forms and publications" and as paper forms at the tax offices.
