On Tuesday, 29 January 2019, the photo exhibition “Pictures of a Year: Sport in Märkisch-Oderland” opened at Rüdersdorf Town Hall. After the exhibition was opened by Mayor André Schaller and Edgar Nemschok, the municipality invited the guests present to coffee and cake. The photos were then viewed in a relaxed atmosphere.
The exhibition by Edgar Nemschok, sports editor of the *Märkische Oderzeitung*, offers an insight into the diverse range of recreational and competitive sports in the region.
“The photos show that even at a very local level, in the smallest clubs, there is some fantastic sport on offer.
The pictures capture moments that are truly one-off. Hundreds of photos are taken in a single weekend at these events. Usually, only one is needed for the sports page of the newspaper. And that one has to be so good that it captivates the reader and draws them into the accompanying text. Most of the photos shown here were taken last year, and quite a few of them never appeared in the print edition of the Märkische Oderzeitung. They lie dormant on hard drives and will simply be deleted at some point.
The viewer is unaware of the circumstances in which such images are created. Sports photos are honest images. There are no ‘enhancements’ for them using expensive photo-editing programmes. They are captured in fleeting moments that are almost impossible to predict and certainly cannot be repeated. And it doesn’t matter whether the sun is shining, the wind is tugging at the photographer, the cold is seeping through their clothes, it’s slowly getting dark, or the hall is poorly lit.
"And when someone comes up to me and says, 'Hey, great photo, and the taxi was brilliant too,' then I realise I actually have a great job!"
Edgar Nemschok
The exhibition will be open to the public from 29 January 2019 during town hall opening hours.
