About the artist:
“The German painter, graphic artist and illustrator was born in Berlin-Moabit. Wendorff studied at the Meisterschule für Grafik and at the Berlin-Weißensee Academy of Fine and Applied Arts.
From 1952 to 1988, she created studies of her husband, the dancer Jean (Hans) Weidt (1904–1988), and his group of young dancers. She also produced drawings and watercolours of the ballet and dance theatre at the Komische Oper in Berlin under Tom Schilling (b. 1928).
She was friends with, amongst others, the painters Otto Dix and Harald Metzkes, and the playwright Peter Hacks.
In the book *Auf der großen Straße. Jean Weidts Erinnerungen* (On the Main Street: Jean Weidt’s Memoirs), compiled by the author Marion Reinisch from tape recordings and published in 1984, nine prints by Wendorff-Weidt relating to Weidt’s dances are reproduced.
However, she became best known for her 470 book illustrations, for example of the novels by Guy de Maupassant (1850–1893) and Honoré de Balzac (1799–1859), as well as for her numerous children’s book illustrations.
