A Rüdersdorf personality
The limestone quarries are also a geological site. For example, a Swedish geologist was able to prove the ice age origin of the North German surface forms in the Rüdersdorf limestone mountains. This geologist was particularly interested in the Ice Age and the problem of how it had spread. He developed the inland ice theory, which is still valid today and states that the ice masses, coming from Scandinavia, covered large parts of northern Europe. To prove this theory, he visited Kalkberge-Rüdersdorf accompanied by several geologists. He was able to prove his theory, which until then had been difficult to substantiate, on the basis of glacial striations and funnels found in the limestone. Rüdersdorf thus became an important site of geological evidence, which the Swede visited several more times. In his honour, the Kalberge Beautification Association erected a memorial stone not far from the Kesselsee. After the expansion of the open-cast mine in the 1970s, the memorial stone was placed on the square of the same name near the entrance to Rüdersdorf (on today's Mühlenstraße).
Question 8: What is the name of the square named after the geologist?
