A shimmering film has been observed on the surface of the water in the Kalkgraben in Rüdersdorf, below the Peter-Lübkes Bridge. Initial assessments suggest that this is most likely a natural phenomenon caused by so-called anaerobic iron bacteria.
These microorganisms occur naturally in many bodies of water and damp soils. When they metabolise iron compounds in the water, a thin, iridescent film may form on the surface, which visually resembles oil or petrol. However, this is not an oil spill, but a well-known and usually harmless natural phenomenon.
Based on current information, there is no immediate danger to people, pets or the environment. The relevant authorities are continuing to monitor the situation.
Please refrain from contacting the fire brigade or the town hall unless there are any unusual changes (e.g. a strong odour, dead fish or widespread pollution).
Thank you for your understanding.
