Change to identity card due to a change of address

- A change of address must be recorded on the identity card
- The change must be made within two weeks of moving into the new main residence
- The new address is stuck onto the ‘Address’ data field and updated on the chip
- You can make the change online if your local authority offers an online registration service, or in person at the citizens’ advice bureau in your new place of residence

– Updating your address details on your identity card online: to update the address details stored on the card’s chip, you will need the CAN number printed on the card. This is the six-digit access number on the front of your identity card, to the right of the expiry date. You will then automatically receive a letter from the Bundesdruckerei containing an address sticker for your identity card, sent to your new residential address.Full text
If, for example, your address has changed following a move, you must have your new address entered on your identity card. This involves updating the chip on your identity card and affixing a sticker with your new address to it.
Even if you move abroad, no longer have an address in Germany and your address abroad has not yet been finalised, your identity card must be updated. The address sticker will then state that you no longer have an address in Germany.

Prerequisites
- Your identity card is valid.
- You have already registered your new address with your local registration office.
Costs (fees, expenses, etc.)
There are no costs involved.
Procedure
- You must register in person at the Citizens’ Office in your new place of residence.
- Please present your valid identity card and your registration certificate.
- The residents’ registration office at your new place of residence will update the address stored on the chip in your identity card and affix a sticker with your new address to your identity card.
- You can authorise another person in writing to update the address on your identity card on your behalf at the Citizens’ Bureau in your new place of residence.
- If your local authority offers the change of address service digitally (electronic registration of residence), you can also use this service. With digital change of address, the address details stored on the chip are updated electronically. You will receive the sticker for your identity card by post.
- You must register in person at the Citizens’ Office in your new place of residence.
Deadlines
You must have your new address updated on your identity card within two weeks of moving into your new main residence.
