- Passport amendment due to a change of address
- Only the place of residence, not the full address, is stated in the passport
- A change of address within the country must be recorded in the passport
- The change is to be made immediately
- No change is required if your new address is in the same town or if you are moving abroad
- Change of address:
- in person or
- by another person with written authorisation
- Changes to your passport can be made at the same time as you change your registered address
- A change of address is indicated by an official address sticker placed in a free space in data field 11 or on the page for official notes
- Updating your address in your passport is free of charge
- When moving abroad: You can notify a German diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate) of your change of address, but there is no obligation to do so
- Responsible authority: the registration office or a German diplomatic mission abroad (embassy or consulate)

Only your place of residence, not your exact address, is entered in your passport. The place of residence stated in your passport only needs to be updated if your place of residence within the country changes.
You can have the address entry in your passport amended, either in person or through a person authorised in writing, at the relevant authority in your new place of residence.
If you are moving abroad and have a new place of residence there, you can register your address abroad. If your address abroad has not yet been finalised, you can register your current address.

Required documents

Prerequisites
- You hold a valid passport.
- Your place of residence has changed.
- Please bring your passport with you to the local authority office when you go to change your registered address.
Costs (fees, expenses, etc.)
There are no costs involved.
Procedure
If your place of residence within the country changes:
- Please register with your local registration office.
- You may authorise another person in writing to have your change of address entered in your passport by the relevant domestic registration authority.
- You can have your passport updated at the same time as you change your registered address within Germany. To do so, please present your valid passport when you change your registered address.
- The registration authority will affix an official residence sticker showing your new place of residence to a blank space in data field 11 or on the page for official notes in your passport.
If your place of residence abroad changes:
- You can register with the German diplomatic mission responsible for your new place of residence abroad, for example an embassy or a consulate.
- There is no obligation to register with a German diplomatic mission abroad.
Deadlines
Once you have moved to a new place of residence within the country, you must have the place of residence entry in your passport amended without delay.
