Stories about the women's place Johanna Elberskirchen

To mark the International Day against Homo-, Bi-, Inter- and Transphobia and the anniversary of Johanna Elberskirchen's death, the municipality of Rüdersdorf near Berlin invites you to a public event on Saturday, 17 May 2025.

At 14:00, a lecture will be held at the memorial plaque for Johanna Elberskirchen (above the Peter Lübkes Bridge, Brückenstraße / corner of Karlstraße), focussing on the life and work of this extraordinary woman. Johanna Elberskirchen was one of the first openly lesbian women in the German Empire, a committed campaigner for women's and gay rights and part of the women's labour movement.

Elio Jay Gäbelein, project coordinator of the "FrauenOrte im Land Brandenburg" project, will provide insights into Elberskirchen's multifaceted and often socially uncomfortable commitment. The event offers an opportunity to reminisce, exchange ideas - and learn from a woman who was far ahead of her time.

Johanna Elberskirchen has been an official part of "FrauenOrte im Land Brandenburg" since 2024 - now the 49th woman to be honoured by this project of the Frauenpolitischer Rat Land Brandenburg e. V. (Brandenburg Women's Political Council). The project makes the historical achievements of women in our state visible and tangible. All interested parties are cordially invited to take part in this special event and together set an example against discrimination and in favour of diversity and remembrance.

As in previous years, the rainbow flag will once again be hoisted at the town hall on this day.
