Successful balance sheet - around 200 kg of CO2 saved

After just five months, the introduction of the cargo bikes that can be borrowed free of charge is already a success. The bikes have been available to borrow free of charge from fLotte Brandenburg in Rüdersdorf Museum Park since mid-August 2024 and are being used extensively. Together, the two bikes have already travelled over 2,200 km, saving around 200 kg of CO2 compared to a conventional small car. This intensive use, even in the wet season, is already exceeding expectations.

The cargo bikes are called RedenRad and HeinitzShuttle and thus make a direct reference to the mining tradition of the municipality. They are used by people from the community as well as guests of the 17-hectare park.

"We are delighted about the additional service that the museum park can offer guests to Rüdersdorf with the two bikes," reports museum park manager Stephen Ruebsam. "Families in particular like to use the cargo bikes for spontaneous tours with the great child seats in the front row."

The cargo bikes are also used from time to time for food sharing. This involves collecting food that is no longer needed from private households or businesses and delivering it to distribution stations via volunteer food sharers who borrow the bike from the museum park (see attached image).

The two Muli bikes were purchased by the municipality of Rüdersdorf near Berlin as part of the cargo bike funding programme of the state of Brandenburg (State Office for Construction and Transport).

"I am delighted that the offer has already been so well received after such a short time and that we have been able to add another piece to the mosaic for the transport turnaround, but also for the attractiveness of our museum park," says Mayor Sabine Löser, summarising her first interim conclusions.

Whether for a tour of the park itself, a bike ride through the municipality or a long tour of the region, the bikes can be hired free of charge by anyone via fLotte Brandenburg and collected and returned at the Museum Park ticket office on the day of booking. Two children can be transported in the basket of the bike, as can a week's shopping or other loads weighing up to 70 kg.
