Work on the replacement of the Mühlenfließbrücke bridge on the A10 motorway is expected to start in autumn 2025 - but for the local sand lizards, the journey begins in spring. As the site of the former Rüdersdorf junction is being used both for the construction site and for the construction of a rainwater retention basin, the protected animals will have to be relocated.
"We are making sure that the sand lizards are not endangered by the work on site," says Ronald Norman, Director of the North-East Branch of Autobahn GmbH des Bundes. "That's why we have created a new, optimally adapted habitat for the animals to move to."
To ensure that the reptiles feel comfortable in their new home, a near-natural environment is being created on the open space between the A10 motorway and the Bergmannsglück housing estate. From March, piles of stones, root stumps and brushwood, open sandy areas for laying eggs and flower strips as a food source will be created. The relocation itself takes place in several stages from spring, depending on the weather conditions: First, reptile protection fences are erected to prevent recolonisation of the construction site area. The animals will then be carefully collected and moved to their new habitat. The measure should be completed by November 2025 at the latest.
But the care of the lizards does not end there: the replacement habitat is regularly maintained to ensure optimal conditions.
"Our aim is to provide the animals with a safe habitat during the construction period," emphasises Ronald Normann. "Because one thing is clear here: we are also thinking of the smallest residents in the new replacement building."
