Christmas - Joseph von Eichendorff
Market and streets are deserted,
Every house is quietly lit,
I walk through the alleys,
Everything looks so festive.
Women have piously decorated
colourful toys at the windows,
a thousand little children stand and look,
are so wonderfully happy.
And I wander out of the walls
Out into the open field,
A noble glow, a holy shudder!
How wide and silent the world is!
Stars twine their circles high,
From the snowy solitude
It rises like marvellous singing -
O you gracious time!
