Flood situation

Dyke runners - Volunteers wanted to support in the flood hazard situation

The municipalities along the Oder are looking for more citizens to volunteer as dyke runners. There is already a high level of willingness, but there are still isolated cases of need in order to ensure a seamless shift replacement.

Dike runners check the dikes in a defined section during floods.

Interested parties can contact the offices of Lebus, Golzow, Barnim-Oderbruch, the municipality of Letschin and the town of Bad Freienwalde.

What is the job of a dyke runner?

Dike runners are out on the Oder dike 8-12 hours a day during floods from alert level III and check the section assigned to them. Any damage detected is marked and reported to the operations control centre. The dyke runners do not remove damaged areas.

What are the requirements?

Those interested should be physically able to manage longer walks. Knowledge about the dykes and structural features of the structures as well as all information about the dyke patrols is provided by experts.

The two associated training courses will take place on Wednesday, 18.09.2024 at 6 p.m. in the Kulturhaus Küstrin-Kietz and on Thursday, 19.09.2024 at 6 p.m. in the Hohenwutzen village community centre.

Why is the function of the dike runner important?

Any damage to the dyke must be repaired immediately in order to ensure the stability of the dyke body during this tense flood situation.
