Federal election 2025
The German Bundestag is the representative body of the Federal Republic of Germany and, as the authoritative legislative body, its most important organ. It consists of representatives of the German people, who are elected by direct, free, equal and secret ballot for a four-year term.
The election to the 21st German Bundestag will take place in 2025. The original date was 28 September. Following the break-up of the governing coalition of the SPD, Alliance 90/The Greens and FDP, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) called a vote of confidence on 11 December. Parliament voted on this motion on 16 December 2024 and withdrew its confidence in Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Federal President Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier then dissolved parliament and scheduled new elections for 23 February 2025 . The 20th German Bundestag will remain fully operational until the constituent sitting of the newly elected Bundestag.
Further information can be found on the website of the Federal Agency for Civic Education or on the website of the German Bundestag.
