Three experienced long-distance runners embarked on an extremely exciting undertaking on 26 May. Willem Mütze, Joachim Barthelmann and Heinz Jaeckel are currently completing a 1,040 kilometre run for charity, linking cities and nations. During their 18 stops on the way from Hennef to Nowy Dwor Gdanski in Poland, the trio, accompanied by their partners, also passed through the municipality of Rüdersdorf.
The extreme athletes were personally welcomed by Mayor André Schaller at the town hall on Saturday, 5 June.
After the energy-sapping stage from Berlin-Wannsee to Rüdersdorf that day, the "ultrarunners" enjoyed a cosy end to the day and set up camp for the night in Rüdersdorf. On Sunday morning, they continued their run towards Poland.
The three participants have already travelled half the world, taking part in numerous ultra runs such as the Trans-Europe Runs from Lisbon to Moscow or from Bari to the North Cape. By contrast, the several hundred marathons they have completed seem almost sobering. In their current project, the "ultrarunning step runners" are raising funds for the Hennef Child Protection Association and two Polish schools to provide the children there with regular hot school meals. The team would also like to present the Polish mayor of the twin town of Hennef with a certificate bearing the coats of arms of all 18 stage towns and greetings from the individual mayors.
