In his speech in Paris on 9 May 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman proposed the creation of a production community for coal and steel. This "Schuman Declaration" led to the founding of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), the Coal and Steel Community. This then formed the cornerstone of today's European Union.
At the 1985 summit meeting of heads of state and government in Milan, it was decided that Europe Day of the European Union should be celebrated on 9 May each year to commemorate this event. Since then, numerous events and festivities have been held on this day since 1986.
For this reason, public buildings all over Germany, including the Rüdersdorf town hall, are being flagged.
