27 January 2013 - Holocaust Remembrance Day

Last Sunday, the citizens of Rüdersdorf commemorated the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp 68 years ago by the Red Army. Despite the adverse winter weather, they made their way to the memorial stone at the Kalkberg cemetery.
Pastor Effenberger and Mayor Schaller emphasised in their words of remembrance that Auschwitz, as a symbol of the mass murder of millions of European Jews under National Socialism, but also of many other ethnic groups, must remain an eternal reminder to us. "But we also have a duty," said André Schaller, "to convey this to our young people."
27 January has been a National Day of Remembrance since 1996 and was declared International Holocaust Remembrance Day by the UN in 2005.
