History and stories about Rüdersdorf -

Anyone who answers the daily puzzle questions can take part in our competition . We wish everyone lots of fun and success.

A Rüdersdorf landmark

The municipality of Rüdersdorf near Berlin has been associated with limestone quarrying for over 750 years, and many famous buildings owe their origin to it, such as the Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin Olympic Stadium, Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam and many other important buildings in Berlin and Brandenburg. To this day, the Rüdersdorf limestone deposit is the largest of its kind in Central Europe.
Technical monuments that once served to advance the lime and cement industry now form the basis of the unique museum park. Covering an area of 17 hectares, it is one of the three largest open-air museums in the state of Brandenburg. It attracts over 50,000 visitors every year. The backdrop of the historical monuments is also used as a venue for events, such as the opera performance of Verdi's "Nabucco" on the pulley pillar in August 2006 and the opera of "Carmen" in 2007.
In the historical landscape of the museum park, you can experience the history of limestone quarrying and processing as well as the development of a modern cement industry at first hand. The limestone has kept many windows open for a little personal journey through time. After all, it was in Rüdersdorf that our current ice age theory was founded. Fossils and minerals tell of this time.
The technical buildings in the museum park, such as the Rumford kilns, the rope pulley pillar or the shaft kiln battery, which were built according to the designs of famous architects such as Schinkel, form a unique architectural ensemble. The museum park is one of the most important industrial monuments in Germany.

17th question: A fossil can also be seen regularly on publications of the Rüdersdorf municipality. Together with a flower blossom, it forms the official logo of the municipality. Which fossil is this?
